This self-inspection form is intended to assist Leadville
businesses owners in improving the fire safety level of their buildings.
Though different code requirements may apply to different businesses,
depending on the type of use of the premises, these general guidelines can
assist any business in improving the safety of employees and customers.
The Leadville/Lake County Fire Rescue will be conducting
business fire inspections in 2004. This handy self-inspection form can act as
a guideline for any business preparing for a fire department or insurance
inspection. This form is downloadable in PDF format. Keep the sheet on file
at your business for future reference. If you have any questions about fire
safety or prevention at your business, please contact Captain Adam Giffen at
the fire department.

- Maintenance: If you have alarm or sprinkler
systems installed in your building, yearly maintenance and inspections of
these systems are required to make sure they remain operational. Keep smoke
detectors in good working order. Obtain a boiler inspection and hood ANSO
service (for restaurants) yearly.
- The three E’s: Egress, Extinguishers,
Electrical.
- Egress: Exit doors and other means of exiting must
remain unlocked and free of obstruction. Keep hardware working smoothly.
Maintain exit lighting by changing bulbs and batteries when needed.
- Extinguishers: Have your fire extinguishers service
tested yearly.
- Electrical: Temporary cords like lamp cord and
other surface wiring are dangerous. So are overloaded electrical
outlets. Have service work and alterations done by a qualified
electrician.
- Address: Be sure your address is displayed in
large (> 4”) numbers on the front of your building.
- Housekeeping: Clutter and storage of trash and
chemicals is a fire hazard. Keep backrooms and alleys clear of debris.
This practice will make a positive impression on customers while helping to
reduce fire hazards.
